Your dryer turns on, the drum spins, you hear it running. But 40 minutes later the clothes are still cold and damp. The motor works. The heat does not.
This is one of the most common dryer failures, and the good news is that the spinning drum tells you the motor and belt are fine. The problem is isolated to the heating side, and finding it is easier than you think once you know the first question to ask.
First Question: Gas or Electric?
This one answer cuts your suspect list in half, because the two dryer types make heat in completely different ways.
Pull the dryer forward and look at what feeds it. An electric dryer has a thick cord going into a large 240-volt outlet with three or four heavy prongs. A gas dryer has a normal power plug plus a black gas line running to the wall.
Electric dryers make heat with a heating element. Gas dryers make heat by lighting a burner with an igniter. Different parts, different failures. Answer this first and you already know which half of the list to check.
The Electric Dryer Path
Three parts cause almost every no-heat problem on an electric dryer.
The breaker. An electric dryer runs on a double-pole breaker, which is really two breakers linked together. Here is the trap: one side can trip while the other stays on. When that happens, the drum still spins on the working side, but the heating circuit is dead. Check your panel first and flip the dryer breaker fully off, then on. This is a free fix people miss constantly.
The heating element. This is the coil that produces the heat, and it burns out with age. When it breaks, the dryer runs perfectly but blows only cool air. It is the second most common electric no-heat cause after the breaker.
The thermal fuse. More on this one below, because it applies to both dryer types and it is the part people fix wrong.
The Gas Dryer Path
Gas dryers add their own set of parts.
The igniter. This is usually the culprit. The igniter glows hot enough to open the gas valve and light the burner. As it ages, it either glows weakly and never gets hot enough to trip the valve, or it stops glowing at all. A telling sign is an igniter that glows orange but the burner never lights.
The gas valve coils. These open the valve to release gas. When they fail, the igniter may glow but no gas comes through to burn.
Gas dryer heat problems often involve the gas line and burner, which is not safe DIY territory. This is the point where a trained tech should take over.
The Part Everyone Fixes Wrong
Both gas and electric dryers have a thermal fuse. It is a small, cheap safety device that permanently cuts the heat circuit when the dryer overheats. Once it blows, it does not reset. The dryer will run but never heat.
Here is the mistake. People replace the blown fuse, the dryer heats for a few days, then it stops again. They think they got a bad part. They did not.
A thermal fuse blows for a reason, and that reason is almost always a clogged vent. When lint blocks the airflow, heat backs up inside the dryer until the fuse sacrifices itself to prevent a fire. Replace the fuse without clearing the vent and it will simply blow again, because the real problem is still there.
If your fuse blew, the vent is the actual repair. The fuse is just the symptom.
What You Can Check Yourself
Before calling anyone, run through these safe steps:
- Flip the breaker fully off and back on, especially on an electric dryer.
- Clean the lint trap completely, then check the outside vent flap for blockage.
- Feel the exhaust outside while the dryer runs. Weak or no airflow means a clogged vent, which is likely why it overheated.
- Do not overload the drum, since packed clothes trap heat and strain the system.
If the dryer still will not heat after these, the failed part is inside, and confirming which one takes a multimeter and some disassembly.
Where to Stop and Call
Some fixes are DIY-friendly if you can confirm the diagnosis. A thermal fuse or heating element on many top brands is accessible with basic tools. But there are clear lines to respect.
Anything involving the gas line, burner, or valve coils is a professional job. So is a control board or wiring fault. And a dryer that overheats is a fire risk, which is one more reason not to leave a heat fault running.
