Washer Won't Drain or Spin? Start Here

Why Draining and Spinning Are Connected

Most washers are built to drain the water out before they spin. It is a simple sequence: empty the tub, then spin the drum fast to fling out the last of the moisture.

That order matters for diagnosis. If your machine cannot drain, it often will not even try to spin, because spinning a tub full of water is pointless. So a drain problem frequently shows up looking like a spin problem. This is why the smart move is to check the drain path first, even if the symptom you noticed was a drum that would not spin.

The Free Fixes Most People Miss

Before you buy a single part, run these in order. They cost nothing and solve a large share of drain and spin problems.

Check the load balance. An uneven or overloaded drum triggers a safety feature that stops the spin. Open the lid, spread the clothes out evenly, and try again. A heavy towel bunched on one side is a common culprit.

Straighten the drain hose. Pull the machine out and look at the hose running to the wall. A kink, a pinch, or a hose shoved too far down the drainpipe can block water from leaving. This is one of the most common no-drain causes and the easiest to fix.

Clean the drain pump filter. This is the big one, and most people do not know it exists. Behind a small panel at the bottom front of the machine sits a filter that catches coins, socks, hair ties, and lint. Over months it clogs until water cannot pass. Lay down a towel and a shallow pan, unscrew the cap slowly, and clear it out. Do this every few months.

Ease up on detergent. Too much soap creates excess suds that can lock up the drain and spin. If you have been pouring heavy, run a rinse cycle with no detergent.

When It Is a Real Part

If the drain path is clear and the load is balanced but the machine still will not drain or spin, you are past the free fixes. Now it is one of these.

The lid switch or door lock. Your washer will not spin unless it knows the lid or door is fully shut. It is a safety feature. On a top-loader, the lid switch is a small plastic post near the tub opening. If it or its bumper breaks, the machine acts like the lid is open and refuses to spin, often with no error code. This is a common failure and a fairly straightforward fix.

The drain pump. The pump pushes water out through the filter and hose. When the impeller cracks, the motor seizes, or a sock jams it, no water moves. The telltale sign is a humming noise from the bottom of the machine with no water leaving, or silence when the drain step should run.

The drive belt. Many top-loaders use a belt to spin the drum. When it stretches or snaps, the drum will not turn even though everything else works. You may hear the motor running with no spinning.

Front-Load vs Top-Load

The two designs fail a little differently, which helps narrow things down.

Front-loaders clog their drain pump filters more often because of how water circulates, and they lean on the door lock sensor, so a worn latch can stop a spin with nothing mechanically broken. Top-loaders are more prone to lid switch failures and, on older units, belt problems.

Either way, the drain-then-spin logic holds, so the checking order stays the same.

What You Can Do vs What Needs a Pro

Clearing the hose, cleaning the filter, balancing the load, and cutting back detergent are all safe and reversible. Do these first, every time.

Once you are into the pump, the drive belt, the lid switch wiring, or the control board, you are working inside the cabinet with the machine dismantled. A cracked impeller, a corroded switch harness, or a control fault is where a technician saves you time and the cost of wrong parts.

A washer that leaves water sitting can also start to smell and can leak, so it is not a problem to leave for weeks.
